Today's day pillar is 甲申 (jia shen), a yang Wood day in the sixty-day cycle. Today is also the solar term 白露 (bailu), one of the twenty-four stations of the solar year. The month pillar is 丙申 (bing shen), governed by the term 立秋 (liqiu).

白露 (bailu), white dew

白露 is named for the dew that shows up white on the grass in the morning, the first plainly visible sign of cold, around the eighth of September.

露 is dew, and it is also the character behind the stem 癸 (gui), yin Water, the smallest and most dispersed form of that element. Three of the twenty-four terms are named for it at different temperatures: 白露, 寒露 (hanlu) and then 霜降 (shuangjiang) for frost.

白露 is sectional and opens the 酉 (you) month, the rooster month, the middle month of autumn. 酉 is the most concentrated Metal branch in the twelve, with only 辛 (xin) hidden inside it.

When the page shows 白露, the month pillar has just changed and the equinox is about a fortnight away.
