Today's day pillar is 庚子 (geng zi), a yang Metal day in the sixty-day cycle. Today is also the solar term 秋分 (qiufen), one of the twenty-four stations of the solar year. The month pillar is 丁酉 (ding you), governed by the term 白露 (bailu).

秋分 (qiufen), autumn equinox

秋分 is the second of the year's two even days, when the sun crosses back over the equator around the twenty-third of September.

Like 春分 (chunfen) it divides both the day and its season in half. After it, nights in the northern hemisphere are the longer half of the pair until the spring.

It is a medial term, seated in the middle of the 酉 (you) month. The symmetry is exact: two equinoxes and two solstices, all four of them medial terms sitting at the centres of their months, never at the edges.

The tradition reads it as the point where yin has drawn level with yang and keeps going, the mirror image of what happened at 春分 six months earlier.
