The late 子 hour, and where a day really begins

For a birth chart the day pillar changes at 23:00, when the 子 (zi) hour begins, and not at midnight.

The twelve earthly branches divide the day into two-hour periods, and 子 is the one straddling midnight, from 23:00 to 01:00. Because the branch begins at 23:00, the classical rule is that the day pillar rolls over then. A birth at 23:30 belongs to the following day pillar, which is a real and frequently mishandled boundary in chart work.

This site works differently on purpose. A daily page covers a whole calendar day, so there is no single clock moment for the rule to act on, and the day pillar shown here is the one for the civil day from midnight to midnight in your device's local time.

So if you are reading your own chart and were born late in the evening, check which convention was used. It is one of the few places where two competent practitioners can hand you two different charts.
