清明 is the term of clear skies and new leaves, and the only solar term that is also a widely observed festival, around the fifth of April.
The name describes the air: washed, bright, without haze. It is the day families across the Chinese-speaking world visit and sweep graves, which is unusual, since most of the twenty-four terms are agricultural markers rather than occasions.
清明 is sectional and opens the 辰 (chen) month, the dragon month. That is the last month of spring, and its branch is one of the four earth branches that sit on the seams between seasons.
